What is a friction drive track?

In agricultural applications, a friction drive track uses a friction-based drive system on certain rubber tracks. Instead of using mechanical teeth or lugs to engage the sprocket, friction‑drive tracks rely on the contact pressure between the track and the drive wheels to transmit power. 

What is the difference between friction and positive drive tracks?

There are two types of agricultural track systems – friction and positive drive: 

  • Positive drive tracks use a mechanical engagement system — typically lugs or teeth on the inside of the track that lock directly into matching sprockets. Because the track is physically driven, it delivers maximum torque transmission, no slippage, and consistent performance even in mud, snow, or heavy‑duty conditions. This design is ideal when reliability and power transmission are critical.
  • Friction drive tracks, on the other hand, rely on surface contact and friction between the track and the drive wheels. However, because they depend on friction, they can be more sensitive to wear, moisture, or debris, which may reduce traction in demanding environments.

 

In short:

  • Positive drive = mechanical engagement, high traction, heavy‑duty performance

  • Friction drive = friction‑based, smoother ride, lighter applications

How are tracks removed and installed?

Proper track removal and installation are important for maximizing track life and performance. While the general process is similar across machines, specific procedures may vary by equipment manufacturer and model. When installing tracks, careful handling, proper track tension and alignment are key.

In general, the removal and installation steps are:

  1. Safely raise the machine
  2. De-tension the track system
  3. Remove any necessary wheels to allow removal of the track
  4. Remove the track
  5. Install the new track
  6. Install previously removed wheels
  7. Tension the track correctly
  8. Lower the machine, verify track tension, and confirm that all bolts and hardware are correctly torqued.
  9. Lubricate the tracks for the initial break-in period
  10. Perform the track alignment procedure

 

To avoid injury or damage to the tracks or machine, Michelin recommends relying on trained technicians from OEMs or track dealers to remove and install tracks safely and in accordance with manufacturer-provided specifications.
